2.1 The Power of Newsgroups.
Before the internet as we know it, there were newsgroups. "Hmm...well I've heard that term before, but what exactly is a newsgroup ?" Think of a newsgroup as a big chalkboard, like ones you had at school. A newsgroup is a "cyber" version of this and bigger than any blackboard you can imagine. People from one class can write questions on the blackboard that no one in the class might know or leave a message for a student who may use the same classroom during the next period. A student from the next class may know the answer for the question and may write his answer on the blackboard for the students in the previous class to see the next day. Newsgroups work on the same principle. They are big message boards which allow people to communicate and share information even though they do not have the same physical location.
Because newsgroups are of the nature they are, only text messages can be transmitted to newsgroups. "Hey I want images! How do I get images from a newsgroup?" After all, how do you write a program or a image in text characters on the blackboard ? Well fortunately some ingenious programmers found a way around that question. They simply created a new language using the same text characters we use for communication that can be decoded to result in an image. Kind of cool, huh?
In today's current trend of the world wide web and web surfers, the power of newsgroups are often over looked, when in fact they are the richest resource of scans available. I can assure you that there you will find more scans than you could have ever imagined. If you have never explored newsgroups, now is the time to give it a shot.
Some people consider newsgroups a bit too technical or are intimidated because they are not familiar with the methods required to take full advantage of them. Because of this, I have lessons for a couple of different programs. If you a new user, you might want to begin using newsgroups with MS Outlook Express. This program is already installed on your computer. However, I only briefly cover the functions of this program as I recommend using Forte Agent as soon as you are comfortable with how newsgroups work. If you are confident enough in your skills, I recommend jumping right in with Agent.
Before you start exploring the software required to use newsgroups, you need to know where to go. After all, there are tens of thousands of newsgroups. Not knowing the right newsgroups and searching for Asian scans is like looking for a needle in a hay stack. I recommend using these newsgroups:
