Welcome to Scan Collecting for Dummies

Collecting pictures of Asian models can be different things to different people. Some liken it to other hobbies, such as collecting baseball cards. Others find it more enjoyable to focus on the models they like the most. Whatever reason you may have, or whatever extent to which you plan to collect, Scan Collecting for Dummies will be one of the greatest resources you find online.

This extensive series of lessons is an effort to provide quality information for scan collectors.  Our specific intention is to give the knowledge and tools to new and/or inexperienced collectors to allow them to enjoy and maximize the potential of their collecting experience.  We have also included some areas that may benefit intermediate/advanced collectors.  Our intention is to provide something for everyone.

Note about programs.

Before proceeding with the intricacies of collecting pictures, you should try to equip yourself with at least the most fundamental tools available for viewing and organizing your pictures. Further, you should become familiar with some of the programs and their capabilities we will suggest you use in the future.  The following is what we feel a comprehensive list of software used in collecting pictures divided into three skill levels: beginners, intermediate, and advanced. Notice that we offer alternative programs in the same category as many people may be more comfortable using different programs than we recommend.

If you do not have software flagged for "Beginners", we recommend you download and install it before continuing. They will not only help you through future lessons, but will probably enhance your online experience in other aspects as well. We recommend waiting on downloading and installing the programs flagged as intermediate and advanced until you reach the respective sections in your progression through this manual.   This is because some of these programs have detailed installation instructions which we elaborate upon later.

Beginners Programs:

web browsers || image viewers || collection verifiers || newsgroup readers

Category Description Downloads
Web Browsers These programs allow you to browse the web graphically by interpreting and viewing .html documents.  Most of you already have these programs or you would not be able to view this page, but........many of you have outdated browser versions.  Here's an instance where the "latest" usually IS the "greatest". We can not stress enough how important it is to keep abreast of the latest versions of your favorite web browser. We still come across people using version 2 of Netscape, and they have no idea what they're missing! It's not just useless bells and whistles here, so if you're not current with your browser it's time to catch up with the Jones's!

Netscape Navigator (Communicator) version 4.5 (Recommended)  [Netscape Home]

smart update (for users with existing version)

Internet Explorer version 4.01

Image Viewers Don't be content to use your web browser to view your pictures offline.  These programs allow you to browse your images directly from a interface other than the windows explorer and web browser.  Most of them support advanced feature like slideshows, thumbnail viewing, description tagging, and much much more.  This utility is a MUST! Intermediate Programs:

mirc client || autoget || ftp client || icq || article decoders

Category Description Downloads
mIRC Client Doing the job with partners is often easier than doing the job yourself.  The mIRC Client gives the opportunity to join Mystman, other Collectors and Scanners, and myself online in a proactive chat environment (Internet Relay Chat).  Here we share our files and advice.  Whether you come to "leech" or to give offerings, you are always welcome to join us on the IRC at DALnet #asianscans. mIRC Client v5.41   [mIRC Scripts Homepage]
AutoGet, mIRC Client Plug In This powerful add on to the mIRC Client will allow you to automatically "draw" files from another IRC user with the cooperative counter-script AutoTrigger. AutoGet version 1.2d (Direct Download)
FTP Client FTP Clients are a very powerful tool.  They allow you to automatically "draw" files from another persons computer (the area he allows access to anyway) who is running a FTP Server.  This is a commonly used form of exchanging and sharing images. Bullet Proof FTP version 1.09a   [Bullet Proof Homepage]

Cute FTP version 2.6.1  (Recommended)  [Cute Homepage]

Internet Neighborhood version 2.3  [Kno Ware Homepage]

Mirabilis ICQ In many respects Mirabilis ICQ is similar to an mIRC Client.  It allows message sending, chat, file sharing, and look up of members with similar interests.  Any serious netizen has his own ICQ number and client so he can be contacted by friends and contacts at all times.  This is really a neat gadget! ICQ version 98a BETA   [Mirabilis Homepage]
Article Decoders This utility is essential for AOL users.  Because AOL does not support using an outside news reader and its *lame* newsreader will only decode articles to a certain length, you will need this.  it may also be valuable to other users who have had trouble decoding articles with their newsreaders. WinCode version 2.61

Advanced Programs:

offline browsers || newsgroup posters || autotrigger || ftp servers || web design programs

Category Description Downloads
Offline Browsers Because many websites post a multitude of scans (line my pages) it is necessary to find a faster and more convenient way to download these scans.  Further many scanners (i.e. Kuni) regularly post new volumes to their website.  Without a quicker way, a serious collector would spend his life letting images load.  Offline Browsers automate this process. Anawave WebSnake version 1.23  [Intermark Homepage]

Black Widow version 3.63  [Black Widow Homepage]

Teleport Pro version 1.29   [Teleport Pro Homepage]

Newsgroup Posting Programs These programs allow you to contribute to the Newsgroups.  They will post files along with any message or header you would like.  Get one of these and start giving back! Autopost version 1.01 KDM

News on Rocketfuel   (Recommended)  [NOR Homepage]

AutoTrigger, mIRC Client Plug In AutoTrigger is a mIRC add on which allows you to share your files effectively and easily on the IRC.  This is a very valuable utility if you would like to contribute. AutoTrigger version 1.3 (Direct Download)
FTP Servers FTP Servers allow you to serve to FTP Clients.  This allows you to share a portion of your hard drive with other users over the net.  This is a way to share a large amount of files, with little to no effort on your end. FTP Serv-U Server version 2.4a  [Serv-U Homepage]

WAR FTP Daemon 1.70 beta 1 release 4  [War FTP Homepage]

Web Design Programs You can always write .html documents with raw code or you can use an editor.  If you are wanting to write your first page, I suggest doing it the easy way.  Get a "What You See Is What You Get" (WYSIWYG) HTML Editor to quickly and easily design a homepage.

Netscape Composer (Communicator) version 4.5 (Recommended)  [Netscape Home]

smart update (for users with existing version)

Note about depth.

We have purposely went very in depth with every section.  So far to the point that you may think we are insulting your intelligence.  This is purposeful because many people need the depth even though you may not.

Note about page loading.

Many of these pages will take a long time to load.  This is because they are very graphics rich.  In most cases, screen captures have been included to explain EVERY step of a given process.  I have done what I could to make the filesizes and images themselves as small as possible as well as including several pages for quite lengthy topics to speed up loading time.  Nevertheless, most pages will load slowly.

Note about terms.

We have used many terms that some people may not be familiar with.   Any term that we feel needs defining has a hyperlink which will take you to the glossary in the appendix.  That way you can simply click the term to see its definition.  We also recommend taking a quick look at the glossary before reading the sections.

Note about Operating System (OS) assumptions.

Most sections of this resource assume you have a computer running Windows 95/98/NT.  Unfortunately many of the programs discussed do NOT have Mac versions.

Note about icons.

Icons have been included to point out things that should be paid special attention.  The icons used along with their particular meanings are shown below.

The Tip Icon with text next to it is a special tip.   Here you will find a hint which may point to an easier way.  Also, this icon is used to point out a special note which may be outside of the scope of the current discussion, yet still important to know.
The Explore Icon with hyperlinks next to it is used to point out a more in depth discussion of a topic is available.  These icons are mainly used in the Part number indexes, but may be used elsewhere.
The Warning Icon is used to point out something that can be dangerous.  It is also used to point out something you specifically should not do.
